Treats for the ladies…

One of their favorite little farm treats is cooked rice topped with a sprinkle of chili powder, herbs, and @hatortempt black soldier fly larvae.

It’s also an easy way to use up leftover rice instead of letting it go to waste!

The black soldier fly larvae add a little extra protein, while the rice makes it a fun treat for the flock.

Just remember—treats should be a small part of a chicken’s diet. Their balanced poultry feed should still make up the majority of what they eat.

Because apparently, even the chickens around here get spoiled.

Why is one of the first things people ask when I say my child is homeschooled…

“But how do they socialize?”
“Aren’t homeschool kids weird?” 😂

Meanwhile, I’ve met some of the kindest, most confident, interesting, and genuinely fun kids through our homeschool community.

Homeschooling doesn’t mean kids are isolated from the world.

It can mean they have the opportunity to build friendships through co-ops, sports, church, 4-H, volunteering, field trips, community activities, and everyday life.

And honestly? Some of the coolest kids I know are homeschool kids.

Different doesn’t mean disconnected.

Once a week, I do a deep clean of the sheep barn and put down fresh straw.

Here in East Texas, we’ve been dealing with an extended stretch of dry conditions. Our county has now declared a local state of disaster because of the worsening drought and wildfire threat, and we’re under a burn ban.

For a farm, drought isn’t simply about having a brown lawn.

Drought affects everything.

🌱 Pastures stop producing the forage livestock depend on.
🐑 Less grass can mean more hay and supplemental feed are needed.
💧 Water becomes a bigger concern for livestock and crops.
🌾 Dry pastures can be damaged by overgrazing if livestock numbers aren’t adjusted.
🔥 Extremely dry vegetation also increases wildfire concerns, which can threaten pasture, livestock, fencing, barns and other farm infrastructure.

We’ve watched our own pasture struggle through this season, and it really gives you a different perspective on just how dependent a farm is on something we can’t control.

So yes… every time I clean the barn and it starts raining, I’ll take it.

We’re praying for rain.
