Installing our lambing pens in the new barn because lambing season is coming—and good preparation starts long before the first lamb arrives.

Lambing pens, often called jug pens, give a ewe and her newborn lambs a quiet, secure space for those important first days.

They allow us to closely monitor the ewe and lamb, make sure the lamb is nursing and getting colostrum, give the pair time to bond without the rest of the flock crowding them, and make it easier to watch for problems that may need attention.

We also want each pen to be clean, dry, draft-free, and large enough for the ewe to comfortably stand, lie down, and care for her lambs.

For us, this is one of those behind-the-scenes parts of sheep farming that you don’t always see—but it matters so much. We’re building our barn with the sheep in mind, and these little pens will have a very important job.

Our first lambs born here on the farm will be here before we know it, and we are SO excited.

Turns out, the simple life is actually pretty chic.

Two years ago, this was just an empty field… today, it’s the barn we’ve dreamed about.

When we moved here in 2024, we knew one day we wanted a barn here. We spent the last two years dreaming, planning, saving, and figuring out exactly what we wanted this space to become.

And now it’s finally standing in our pasture.

This barn will be home to our sheep, a place to store hay and farm supplies, and another little piece of the homestead we’ve been working so hard to build.

There’s something really special about watching a dream slowly become part of your everyday life.

We’re just getting started.
